The Random Team Generator splits a list of names into fair, random teams. Paste your names, open the Teams tab, choose how many teams you need, and press Make teams — the list is shuffled with a secure random generator and dealt out so team sizes never differ by more than one. Prefer the drama of a draft? Spin the wheel to pick players one at a time.
How to use the Random Team Generator
- Type or paste everyone’s name into Entries, one per line.
- Open the Teams tab and choose the number of teams, or the number of people per team.
- Press Make teams. Press it again for a different random split.
- Copy the teams to paste into a chat, or spin the wheel to pick captains one by one.
How the teams are made fair
The names are shuffled with the Fisher–Yates algorithm, drawing every swap from the browser’s cryptographically secure generator, and then dealt round the teams like cards. That gives every possible split the same chance and guarantees the teams are as even as the numbers allow: 14 players in 3 teams always come out as 5, 5 and 4.
Number of teams, or people per team?
Choose Number of teams when you know how many groups you need — four tables, two sides. Choose People per team when the group size matters — pairs for a worksheet, five-a-side football — and the generator works out how many teams that makes.
Draft mode: spin for captains and picks
The wheel itself works as a draft. With Take the winner off the wheel afterwards switched on (it is on by default on this page), each spin picks the next player and removes them, so the wheel shrinks until everyone has been chosen. Use it to pick team captains, a speaking order or who chooses first.

Frequently asked questions
How do I split names into random teams?
Paste the names into Entries, open the Teams tab, choose how many teams you want, and press Make teams. Press it again for a new random split.
Are the teams balanced?
Team sizes are balanced: they never differ by more than one person. The generator does not know anyone’s skill level, so for skill-balanced sides pick captains with the wheel and let them choose in turns.
Can I make pairs?
Yes. Choose People per team and set it to 2. With an odd number of names, one group will have three people.
Can I copy the teams?
Yes. Press Copy teams to copy every team and its members as plain text, ready to paste into email, chat or a document.
